PEDRO ESTEVEZ - HABANO LANCERO
by Fletchman on Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:14 pm
avatar_picture
Country of Origin: Honduras
Size: 7 1/2 x 38 - Lancero - Parejo
Wrapper: Ecuadoran grown Habano
Filler: Viso-Nicaragua, Ligero-Mexico, Seco-Honduras
Binder: Honduran
Medium body

I received a sampler of these cigars from the folks at Habnos y Hermanos. I for one have not been a big Lancero fan. I really never saw the attraction as my experience with this shape usually included a hard draw, and a hot crooked burn. Theses cigars really educated me on the difference between a cigar roller and a true master. The two lanceros I recieved were uniform and straight with a beautiful caps. The draw was effortless with excellent flavor eminating from the habano wrapper. The burn was razor sharp with a firm gray ash. The smoke was cool as the draw was no work at all. I took my time with this cigar and have a complete new appreciation for this shape. The rest of the cigars of the sampler were equally as well constructed. I have smoked a lot of good cigars over the past several years but have never had a bundled cigar even close in quality of construction. The flavor was excellent in all cigars. Check them out before the schip hits the fan.

HATUEY - SPECIAL RESERVE -CABINET COLLECTION
by Fletchman on Sun Apr 19, 2009 11:49 am
avatar_picture
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
Size & Shape: 5 x 50 - Parejo
Wrapper: Corojo - Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Binder: Dominican Habano
Strength & body: Medium leaning towards full.

The first thing I noticed about the cigar was the construction. The reddish hued corojo wrapper was smooth with few veins. The cap a tripple, cuban style, very well executed. The body was solid but not hard with no soft spots. The the quality of construction and skill of the roller were top notch as I have come to expect from Hatuey. The ash was a light grey and firm. On light up the first draws are smooth with the slightly sweet corojo flavor that build gradually to a medium strength with ample flavor. I enjoyed this cigar from begining to end and highly recommend them.

P.S. I just finished the perfecto of this line. It was the best cigar I have smoked this year. The flavors were the same profile as the robusto but more intense. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

SCHIP
by Fletchman on Tue Mar 31, 2009 9:19 pm

Here we are on the eve of the day Cigar makers, retailers and Cigar Smokers have dreaded. The SCHIP tax will go into effect as of midnight tonight and will mean higher prices to people like you and me who love the leaf. Tobacco in any form is politicaly incorrect. Therefore politicians are free to tax as they see fit. There is no thought given to the people who will lose jobs or small business that will go under. The government is free to attack an industry that isn't protected by public opinion and their actions should be a warning. Politicians are about power and the more control they have the more they want. If you think they are looking out for your best interest, I have a bridge for sale.

PARTAGAS - SPANISH ROSADO - SAN AUGUSTIN
by Fletchman on Fri Feb 06, 2009 5:22 pm
avatar_picture
Country of Origin: Honduras
Size & Shape: 5.5 x 52 - Parejo
Wrapper: Honduran - San Augustin Valley - Rosado
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Dom Rep/Mexico/Honduras
strength: medium/full

These cigars start with a beautiful reddish hued Rosado wrapper. The wrapper imparts a very rich, unique flavor thats spicy and slightly sweet. The fillers give the flavor a full back bone and builds gently through out the smoke. Construction was excellent with a good draw and an even burn. The ash was a stark white and firm. To me these cigars are a special treat. I would say they are probably not for the beginner but will be highly appreciated by the experienced smoker.

Famous Private Selection Dominican Corona
by tacHammer on Sun Feb 01, 2009 11:58 am
avatar_picture
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic

Filler: Peruvian Seco and Ligero, Dominican Piloto Cubano Seco and
Ligero, Dominican Criollo '98, and Nicaraguan Ligero longfillers
Binder: Dominican Olor
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut
Strength: Mild-Medium

The natural wrapper was a little veiny and the colors varied some but was evenly rolled. The draw was just right and the ash and burn near perfect.

Upon taking the first puff you realize this isn't a run of the mill dominican cigar. The complex flavors tantalize your taste buds from the start and continues to build throughout the cigar.
I have to say that I was delightfully surprized with the flavors this cigar produced. Having the word "Dominican" writen on the band gave me the preconception of dull, mild, flavorless and boring as many Dominican bundle and even box cigars have turned out to be in the past. Then I looked at the website and was astounded at how many different kinds of tobacco has been blended into this cigar. The only thing that would prevent me from buying this cigar in the future is the $60 a box price tag. This cigar rounds out with morning coffee better than most and I would love to always have some on hand. I will keep my eye open for sales.

This one gets an 8 on the tac-o-meter!

SCHIP

The SCHIP breezed through the House of Representatives so fast it was hardly noticed. Now it goes to the Senate and it doesn't look much better there. If you havent written your Senators of Congresswomen/men it's never too late to express your opinion.

HOYO DE MONTERREY DARK SUMATRA - MEDIA NOCHE
by Fletchman on Sat Jan 10, 2009 10:48 am
avatar_picture
Country of Origin: Honduras
Size & Shape; 5.75 x 54 - Parejo
Wrapper: Sungrown Ecuador Sumatra - Dark
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Hon/Nic/Dom Rep
Full body/Full Strength

It's been a while since I'd had a Dark Sumatra and I was very plesantly reminded how good they are. The blend seems almost to have matured into a cigar that is very similar to the initial offering but smoother and more complex. Rich with a decent bit of spice and definite hint of espresso. After lighting the flavor built evenly with a long smooth finish with a hint of "cocoa dust" at the end. Construction is excellent with a good draw and even burn. If you are a cigar smoker who prefers a medium bodied smoke, I wouldn't be turned off by the full rating. The cigar is not overpowering and I am sure you will enjoy it. The flavor of the sungrown Sumatra seed wrapper, the smoothness of the Connecticut Broadleaf binder and the richness of the filler blend all combine to make a great cigar. The Fletchmanometer gives the Media Noche a "9". Enjoy.

Protest Against SCHIP

Gents,

Listed below is a website for the US Senate and House of Representitves. Call, write, email, get petitions going at your local Brick and Motar and have locals sign it along with their addresses and DOB. Make sure you have the proper districts so the petitions go to the proper Representitves where the Cigar shops are located. We need to attack this ASAP and let our voices be heard. This is serious and our so called Government is not looking out for us, the industry, the local shops which will all vanish and most of all the Third World Countries that will be ruined Such as The DR, Honduras, Nicaragua, and most of the growing nations, i.e. Ecuador and even the US. This would cost us even more since we would have to provide aid to these countries down the road. If they don't abandon the SCHIP bill it will cost us American tax payers even more in the long run.

Value Line Honduran 600
by Fletchman on Sun Nov 30, 2008 5:44 pm
avatar_picture
Country of Origin: Honduras
Size: 6 1/2 x 52 Torpedo
Wrapper: Honduras
Filler: Honduras
Binder: Honduras
Strength: Medium

With a name like "Value Line" I expected a dog rocket good for passing out to guys who like to smoke but don't like to buy. Or what friends call a "yard gar". Something to stick in your mouth while mowing the lawn.
I don't smoke while mowing the lawn but to each his own. I wasn't expecting the flavor and quality I found with these smokes. They have a smooth reddish hued wrapper, nicely rolled with some heft to it. The wrapper is from Honduras but tastes as if it comes from connecticut seed.
The flavor was smooth and creamy and pretty straight forward. The burn was straight with a dark gray ash. Although these probably won't win any awards they are a good cigar for the money and fans of mild/medium smokes would do themselves a favor by checking them out. Made for Famous smoke shop by Guillermo Rico, the man behind Gran Habano cigars.

La Campina Robusto from Famous-Smoke

Cigar Brand: La Campina
Name or Shape: Robusto
Size: 5" x 50 ring
Wrapper: Natural
Filler: Esteli Ligero, Jalapa Viso and Honduran Jamastran Seco
Binder: Not listed

Review Criteria (0-10 point scale)
1. Appearance - 7
2. Construction - 8
3. Burn (ash, etc.) - 7
4. Draw - 9
5. Flavor - 6
6. Aroma - 8
Total Score: (Numbers divided by 6) = 7.5

Smooth, mild to medium bodied, first one cracked up to the band after ¼ the way in. After some humi time the second one made it to the end with no cracking. Since the cracking seemed to have more to do with humidification than construction I didn’t consider that should affect the score.

Burn for both was a little uneven but no runners or tunneling and never needed correcting. Nice finish even though a little faint lasts a long time.

Flavor was the only part that was difficult for me to rate. Though it wasn’t bad there wasn’t much to remember about the taste.
I guess Neutral would best describe the Flavor.

Get's a 7.5 on the tac-o-meter.

Olor Nicaragua

avatar_picture
Country: Nicaragua
Length/Ring: 5 x 50
Shape: Robusto
Filler: Nicaraguan Habano
Binder: Nicaraguan Habano
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
Strength: Full

I received two of these from Famous-Smoke almost a month ago. I immediately smoked one (as I always do, I just can't help myself) and set the other one in the humi for a little naptime before I did my review on them.

These cigars start out with the typical spiciness of Nicaraguan tobaccos but with a little smoothness added. I couldn't quite put my finger on how to describe it. It's almost like a little of the edge was taken off. Perfect draw and burn and the wrapper was beautiful.

I like Olor Fuerte but these are even better. The cigar built as it got shorter but never to the point where it kinda burned your tongue. It is a good rounded but full bodied libeto.

Get's an 8½ on the tac-o-meter.
